Product Description
(This module is included in the System B)
The S103 is a 4×4 (4 input, 4 output) matrix mixer and VCA with some unique performance controls. If you don’t know what a matrix mixer is, then the best way to start is to try it first. There is no easy way of explaining the concept in text. But in reality, it’s easier if you spend some time with it. Basically it’s like having 4 mixers all with the same inputs.
Aside from the 4 inputs and 4 outputs. The remaining patch points in the matrix are input CV. When no cable is connected to those, the nearby knob acts as an attenuator for the corresponding input to go into the corresponding output. if a cable is connected, Then that CV controls attenuation and the knob becomes an attenuator for that CV. Note here that if CV is more than 1V, this will amplify the input (thats why this module is also a VCA).
The Bipolar/Unipolar switch dictates how the knobs work. In unipolar mode, the knobs are attenuators. In Bipolar the knob are attenuverters, with zero setting at 12 o’clock. This means that the input will be inverted if the knob is set to less than 12 o’clock. When switching between Bipolar and Unipolar, the knobs will be automatically adjusted to keep current mixing settings the same (except for inversion). Notice also in Bipolar mode that the CV inputs will accept voltages less than 0V which will invert the input signal. While in Unipolar mode CV less than 0V will be blocked and considered as 0V. The module can obviously be used to mix both audio and CV. Bipolar mode is particularly useful for mixing CV. The Amp knob is a simple manual amplifier that affects the whole module.
The Random button will randomize all the knobs settings. H Shift buttons will shift the knobs settings horizontally. V Shift will shift them vertically. These buttons are good for performance and automation. You can get interesting results playing with these.
As this module is an amplifier, It has a clipping LED on the bottom left. The clipping level can as usual be controlled with the right click menu.
